In May of 2007, the city of Mercer Island signed [http://www.mercergov.org/files/ab4212x4-6.pdf Resolution No. 1389] which set a goal of a 80% reduction below 2007 levels by 2050. Certainly this was a good start, but unfortunately represents only a weak target. Specifically, the latest scientific evidence suggests a 95% reduction below 1990 emission levels is needed by 2050 and not surprisingly 2007 levels were significantly higher than 1990 levels. Additionally, by only specifying a 2050 target, little motivation exists for significant immediate action.

Did you know the city of Mercer Island is one of the few eastside cities that has yet to sign on to the [http://www.usmayors.org/climateprotection/agreement.htm US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement]? The following 10 local cities HAVE signed it: Bellevue, Clyde Hill, Carnation, Issaquah, Kirkland, Redmond, Renton, Sammammish, Snoqualmie, and Yarrow Point.

The US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement suggests working to reduce emissions to 7% below 1990 levels by 2012. Although the latest research suggests that Kyoto type limits may not be adequate to avoid catastrophic climate change, getting started earlier with emissions reductions will make more substantial longer term reductions easier to perform.

As a further point of reference, the city of Seattle has established [http://carbonneutral.seattle.gov/2010/07/20/about-carbon-neutral-seattle/ carbon neutrality] as one of its council priorities, and is in the process of investigating how it might become carbon neutral by 2030.

We recommend the city council pass a resolution to sign the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and begin a more aggressive plan of emissions reductions.
